I see from MWO that this word for a lesbian only goes back to 1942, `origin unknown`. Any informed speculation available? It`s closeness to `dick` is interesting.

There is considerable ridiculous uninformed and unsupported speculation available, such as:(1) from old-fashioned "dyke" = "ditch", with reference to the vagina;(2) from the Greek goddess of justice...

Fred Shapiro of Yale recently antedated "bulldyker" to 1906 Philadelphia.The origin is unknown, and, as Richard points out, the field is full of ridiculous speculation.
